Johnny - July 6

"The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool's heart blurts out folly... A person finds joy in giving an apt reply-and how good is a timely word! ... Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a ruling rightly given. (12:23, 15:23, 25:11)

The whole sections about kind, gentle, apt, and now timely words are quite timely indeed. Especially on this trip, I have found myself speaking out of turn or saying things with no intent of love or care but rather just to say them. I do this in other things as well. I find that I have a quick tongue and am quick to attack. Yet, when I need to say something I often don't. It's difficult to truly find the right words at the right time.

"A person finds joy in giving an apt reply and how good is a timely word!"

These words strike my heart very deeply. I've shared before how I went to a conference in Kansas City and found myself praying for those around me; saying things that I didn't even realize I was thinking and seeing the effect they had on those I prayed for. Saying those words were timely for those I prayed for, and really did make me feel good. But I wonder now, outside of an environment of a conference or on top of the mountain, that I can truly speak apt words out of love and care while in tune with the Holy Spirit, or if I'm just chasing some self-gratification. Whether I'm just saying all sorts of things to lift myself up by speaking out of turn. I realize, too, what may be said out of care, can be just as hurtful if it is said out of turn. There's an importance of not only the right words but the right time. I really pray that I can embrace all the aspects of the past few days. To not only be kind and gentle, but understanding, forthright, honest, and filled with apt words through the Holy Spirit. And truly, that I can say these words at the right time, not too late or not too early, but at the time that they are needed. That my words may be filled with true love and genuine concern and not for my own sake.

Peter- Praise 5/22

One part that stood out to me is that self pride will make others less willing to give you credit for things you did well in. This applies to school, church, and to the work place. I often do this because I feel that I’m not valued enough. My self pride and affirmation stems from the fact that I want affirmation from others when I think I do something well and when I’m not praised I praise my self in front of others and how well I conducted the task. Are you quick to praise and affirm others? Honestly speaking I’m not quick to praise and affirm others. I usually think if I can do it better or the flaws in the person. I look at the negative parts of the person and their actions. I need to get better at telling people that they did a good job and praising them for their actions. I also feel my self praise is too much. I’m very arrogant and quick to praise myself rather than focus on what I can do better. I’m a sinner and I pray that I can be better at praising others for their act...

"Who has woe? Who has sorrow?      Who has strife? Who has complaints?      Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30  Those who linger over wine,      who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. 31  Do not gaze at wine when it is red,      when it sparkles in the cup,      when it goes down smoothly! 32  In the end it bites like a snake      and poisons like a viper. 33  Your eyes will see strange sights,      and your mind will imagine confusing things. 34  You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,      lying on top of the rigging. 35  “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!      They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up      so I can find another drink?” -Proverbs 23:29-35 The concept of addiction is filled...

Johnny - June 8

"Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers." (5:15-17) Well this is a fun one seeing as the devotional describes the importance of abstinence and marital sex. This is a strange topic to discuss and think about. While there certainly will continue to be more and more opportunities(?) as life goes on, the conflict that someone who grows up in the church will go through is similar to all those other things that cause shame and uncomfortable situations. Like when everyone's New Year's testimony was about swearing or other stuff that seem hard to reconcile with Christianity, especially something that's so repressed in our lives. The idea behind abstinence makes sense for the most part. Only engage in something so intimate to someone who you value and who will equally value you. Someone you're...
