June 9 Sam Pr 5:18-19

“May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭5:18-19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Interesting (and good?) that I get this one! It’s actually one of my favorite verses in the Bible. I was teasing Anna that for my devotional I am supposed to write about how her breast should satisfy me always...

But in all seriousness, this is actually a very important and challenging set of verses, especially for young men.. I’ve been married for 10 and a half years now. And don’t get me wrong, I love my wife more everyday. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s true. The most interesting thing to me is how this love has evolved. To be completely honest, the beginning of marriage was more physical, and as life has gotten more busy and full, our connection is felt most deeply at the heart. And while I thought going into marriage that the physical part of marriage will always be front and center, I’ve seen how it has evolved and taken more of a back seat (but of course still important part) in our relationship. And it’s axtually not bad!

With this though comes a very real temptation for me to seek sexual satisfaction from someone other than my wife. Not that I’ve ever seriously thought about, or even been in any kind of situation where I’d cheat on my wife (Lord have mercy that that won’t ever happen), but in my wandering eyes and lustful heart. I know the internet presents such a real and difficult temptation to overcome. I don’t know how young men can overcome it these days.

And that’s why I, and all young men, need these verses. I actually recite these verse when I’m tenpted to lust after another woman. I heard a great sermon on this verse years ago and while speaking on this verse, the pastor taught me that  a mans  wife should always be his  standard of beauty. So this verse and that thought has helped me overcome tempataions. It is not easy. And I love my wife to death. So I also think about how my wife would feel if I had to confess these temptations to her.

While you may not have wives, these verses give you the opportunity to look forward to when you do. And I hope it’s gives you some encouragement to overcome momentary satisfaction now while waiting in anticipation of experiencing the beauty of sexual intimacy in a covenant marriage relationship. It’s what God intended sex to be for, and t truly is something worth waiting for!

Peter- Praise 5/22

One part that stood out to me is that self pride will make others less willing to give you credit for things you did well in. This applies to school, church, and to the work place. I often do this because I feel that I’m not valued enough. My self pride and affirmation stems from the fact that I want affirmation from others when I think I do something well and when I’m not praised I praise my self in front of others and how well I conducted the task. Are you quick to praise and affirm others? Honestly speaking I’m not quick to praise and affirm others. I usually think if I can do it better or the flaws in the person. I look at the negative parts of the person and their actions. I need to get better at telling people that they did a good job and praising them for their actions. I also feel my self praise is too much. I’m very arrogant and quick to praise myself rather than focus on what I can do better. I’m a sinner and I pray that I can be better at praising others for their act...

"Who has woe? Who has sorrow?      Who has strife? Who has complaints?      Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30  Those who linger over wine,      who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. 31  Do not gaze at wine when it is red,      when it sparkles in the cup,      when it goes down smoothly! 32  In the end it bites like a snake      and poisons like a viper. 33  Your eyes will see strange sights,      and your mind will imagine confusing things. 34  You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,      lying on top of the rigging. 35  “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!      They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up      so I can find another drink?” -Proverbs 23:29-35 The concept of addiction is filled...

Johnny - June 8

"Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers." (5:15-17) Well this is a fun one seeing as the devotional describes the importance of abstinence and marital sex. This is a strange topic to discuss and think about. While there certainly will continue to be more and more opportunities(?) as life goes on, the conflict that someone who grows up in the church will go through is similar to all those other things that cause shame and uncomfortable situations. Like when everyone's New Year's testimony was about swearing or other stuff that seem hard to reconcile with Christianity, especially something that's so repressed in our lives. The idea behind abstinence makes sense for the most part. Only engage in something so intimate to someone who you value and who will equally value you. Someone you're...
